I first watched this film with my family in Germany when we decided to hop into a small local theater. We watched it in German so I didn't understand it much the first time watching. Luckily, I got to watch it again in English on the plane back to Taiwan.
A Late Quartet is a wonderful film about the intricate relationships of musicians working together, different perspectives on how to approach music, and how a musician reflects as his days are behind him. It is perhaps the imperfections of us as individuals that gives our music its character.
Having played piano alone for most of my childhood, I first experienced performing classical music with other musicians when I joined a Piano Quintet in college. It was certainly a breath of fresh air, even though there was great pressure to perform well with the group. I still remember we played a beautiful Dvorak piece for our final concert. It was one of my most challenging and rewarding musical experience.
The delicate expressions of string instruments never stopped intriguing me, and the film, A Late Quartet, reminded me of that. It inspired me to use a string quartet in the arrangement of Show Luo's My Queen(我的皇后). And I like how it turned out.
