3.11 is a day the world remembers and prays for Fukushima.
For some who might not know, I actually lived in Fukushima for 3 years. It was my first job out of college, teaching English in a small town called Yanaizu, in the Aizu area, located in the western part of Fukushima. I didn’t know anything about Fukushima and didn’t know what to expect when I first went there. But I ended up loving this place and all its natural beauty. Yanaizu was a beautiful town, with a stunning Tadami river running through the town, and gorgeous mountains that surround it.
But best of all, the people were very warm and welcoming. Being the only foreigner living in a small town of 4,000 people was not easy. But I was embraced as one of them. I participated in all sorts of local events, like the town marathons, volleyball contests, and festivals. And I was glad I got to hold a music concert for the town when they built a new community hall. Even when I visited Yanaizu again 9 years later, my students and colleagues still remembered me and we chatted like old friends once again.
Living in Fukushima taught me that it is ok to live outside of our comfort zones sometimes. There might be traditions and experiences that are novel to us. But it is ok to give new things a try and be a beginner again. This still holds true to me to this day, as I love to try new things when creating music. It is always good to maintain curiosity like a child. I hope that one day, you can visit Fukushima and see its beauty with your own eyes.
